During the 1970’s I spent just about every waking hour at Duxford , Cambs, as a member of The Essex Aviation Group… When Ormond Haydon Ballie arrived from Canada with this beauty a new dawn had arrived on the U.K. Warbird scene …I remember well Ormond’s displays in this Sea Fury, they were breathtaking, and on a Sunday morning we’d all end up in the Red Lion …. He led life in the fast lane but was a wonderful character, “The Black Knight “ when he was piloting his T-33 …..Sadly Ormond was killed in Germany whilst piloting his newly acquired P51 Cavalier Mustang ( I-Bill ) he’d recently acquired from Italy..,He was also instrumental in kick starting the British Warbird scene, importing Spitfires from Burma, Bolingbroke’s from Canada, F86 Sabres from Germany and a CF100 he bought with him from Canada and two T-33 Shooting Stars ……….Remembering here not only Sir Sydney Camm’s ultimate genius in Piston Power, but also a fine airman and wonderful display pilot…TW.
