#OnThisDay 1945

It’s a very special day for the Fleet Air Arm. On 3 December 1945 Legendary Fleet Air Arm Pilot , Lt Cdr Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown made the first ever Carrier deck landing and take off by a jet aircraft. This was a De Havilland Sea Vampire, on HMS OCEAN and this very jet is preserved in the Fleet Air Arm Museum!

That day on the flight deck of HMS Ocean saw the start of a new era of Carrier Aviation.

When Captain Eric “Winkle” Brown CBE, DSC, AFC and Hon FRAeS RN died aged 97 in 2016 he had flown 487 different types of aircraft, made 2,407 deck landings at sea and 2,721 take-offs during his career. World records unlikely to ever be broken!

His skill and courage quite simply changed the course of aviation.
